The ins & outs of your private photographer's process...
How does the Booking Process work?
I always suggest booking as early as you can to ensure a spot (It still never hurts to ask last minute). The earlier you book, the more time we have to plan for your shoot. I try to always keep prime times open in my schedule for clients (Best light, after work hours ... etc). Once we find a mutual time & date that works, you will then need to secure your spot with a non-refundable $60 retainer. After this is received, I will send you an E-Confirmation that will include the date and time of your session as well as other important information. You are always welcome to send me images you love so I have a good idea of what you are looking for (Pinterest Boards are best). I also offer pre-session consultations in person upon request. These are highly recommend, as it is a great way to get to know your photographer & communicate ideas and details regarding your session.
What time of day is best for pictures?
As a photographer who works outdoors most of the time, it is important that I get the best light possible. This is whenever the sun is on an angle (Between 4:00 & 7:00). This light is the most flattering and wont create harsh shadows & pieces of over exposer. The quality of your images very much depends on the light. Over cast days are also ideal as its creates a natural soft box & even light. Darker days, rainy days or just after sunset will create very dull, grainy images, so it is best to postpone your session in these cases.
Outdoor or indoor?
If outside is at all possible, I very much recommend it! I do have many set options, backdrops & proper lighting for indoor shoots as well. If it is a bright or hot day, I don't recommend bringing young ones under 4 months outdoors (For obvious reasons). I have multiple locations available (indoor & outdoor). If you do have a location in mind at a reasonable distance, we can for sure explore that option!
My child is very impatient... will you be able to take his/her picture?
I have worked with children for years (Camps, daycare, pre-school & even as a professional Disney Princess) so I have MANY tricks up my sleeve to ensure your child feels at eased & entertained. If worst comes to worse & I do not get all the shots I need (Baby or child is just not having it that day) then there will be a free re-shoot that we will schedule. I have a daughter, so I completely understand that they sometimes just have bad days!
What do we wear?
I advise visiting my Pinterest Page or my What to Wear Guide on the blog. You are paying a fair amount of money to get your images done, it's an investment, so I always recommend going all out on your outfits. These are YOUR memories and YOUR pictures. You don't want to pay for a family session & come in sweatshirts & basic clothes. I can not see what is in your closet so it is hard for me to advise you on what to wear. You can, however, send me images of outfits you have in mind if you want a second opinion. I do have outfits & accessories at the studios for children & babies. The in person consultation is also a wonderful way to come up with style ideas.
What to expect from my session...
Maternity - It's all about the bump! On the day of your session, come prepared with multiple outfits for yourself, your partner and any additional child you may have. You may also bring little baby shoes, outfits or other cute props you want to include. If you have specific shots/ backdrops/ poses you have in mind, please discuss them with me ahead of time so that I know I have it all available. Keep in mind that pictures are like snowflakes - no two are the same. So any image you send me will inspire the set/ look of the finished photograph.
We will flow through a variety of looks & poses based on images that inspired you or myself. There will be a mix of shots with you alone & you with your partner, child & the entire family. Outdoor sessions are recommended for a maternity shoot as you get more of a variety & natural pictures. If you ever feel tired or need water during your shoot, just let me know! I don't ever keep a time limit on my full sessions, so don't feel pressured to go quickly through the poses (I know you tire easily these days).
Newborn - It is important that baby is as sleepy as possible for his/her session. Make sure they are fed right before you get into the car to come over. Once you arrive, I will take the little one out of his/her car seat & prep them to begin shooting. If you have specific shots/looks in mind, please communicate this with me prior to your session as I will have all the sets created ahead of time. If you have another young child with you, I have movies they can watch until it is time for family photos. I do try to incorporate siblings into sets before family pictures (So they don't get too annoyed with waiting). You can also bring snacks for your other child as newborn sessions can stretch a long time & the room needs to be a calm energy.
Safety FIRST! Always be within arms length of your baby (Yourself or your husband). I will always ask you to be right there & to have your eye on them at all times. If you ever feel uncomfortable with a pose, please speak up & we will change it. I will never do a pose that will put a baby at risk (they will never be posed in anything/near anything that is breakable or sharp & I do not pose newborn babies with family dogs. You may trust your pet, but animals are always unpredictable & the risk is not worth the reward). If your other child is too young to hold the newborn independently, then mom or dad needs to assist, we will also try different poses that will keep the children in comfortable & fafe distances. The calmer you are, the calmer everyone will be.
Newborns ideally need to be asleep during their session. This way they will pose easier & be more comfortable during their session. If your baby has colic or is sick, chances are, they will have a less successful session. Reschedule if you need to, or do what you can to ensure your little one is comfortable. ALL babies are different. Some take 45 minutes to finish their session & some can take longer. I shoot until all the shots are gathered. If it runs on to long then you may be asked to come back for family pictures if that is a possibility for you. I will never schedule another session after a newborn session in case more time is needed.
Baby/ Toddler - Please come to your session prepared with outfits, diapers, beverages & bribes. If a baby is mobile it is important to keep them as happy and entertained as possible! Because babies & toddlers loose their patience a lot faster, I will be transitioning through sets a lot more swiftly to ensure all shots are gathered. We want your baby to be natural and full of personality. To accomplish this, you need to be as calm as possible & we must not overwhelm him/her. It is great when parents jump up & down making funny faces behind me, but this can sometimes be overwhelming for a baby. I know parents want to get all the smily pictures (so do I), but just have one parent or a sibling trying to make baby smile. When there are over 3 people in the room yelling directions out, baby gets quite frustrated.
Please always be within arms reach of your little one. Safety First! If you have props, sets or looks in mind, please discuss them with me before hand. I have a MILLION accessories, outfits, props & sets for babies so there is no shortage of adorableness to add to your images.
Cake Smash - Cake smashes are my most popular session. This is because so much work goes into the set & the cake & your little one just has a blast! I must warn you... some parents get more cake on them then their baby does so I recommend bringing a change of clothes (One for family pictures & one for cake smash pictures). Make sure you have their cake smash outfit, towels, baby wipes & family outfit with you (A bottle of milk will be great as well). It is always recommended that you let your little one try some cake prior to their session so you can see how they will react (Some babies do not like cake... surprisingly)! We start with family pictures (Generally outdoors), do a couple non-cake smash pictures of your little one, poses with the chalkboard & O.N.E blocks... then we start cake smashing! We move through sets quickly to ensure your little one is not fed up by the time we get around to the cake smash!
How long until I receive my pictures?
Pictures take 1-2 weeks to complete (Depending on the session & my schedule). If images are late for any readon, you would receive a free image!
Do I choose the pictures you edit?
I shoot the images with a vision in mind. This is the difference between a private photographer & factory studios. Because there is intent behind a photograph & I work hard to get the lighting & composition just right.
What happens to the unedited pictures?
The proofs are keep for a week after your album is finalized, although unusable pictures are culled during the sorting process. You can request to see all the proofs after your album is complete, but this is a $50 fee.
